Paul Slater is a Managing Director of Griffin Holdings Group LLC* and brings significant experience to bear in connection with mergers and acquisitions, project finance, placements of debt and equity and troubled company matters, particularly in the maritime industry. Paul is recognized as an authority on international project finance, maritime economics and marine safety and is a regular contributor to trade and international press on such matters.

Paul is also Chairman and CEO of First International Corporation, a global financial advisor to the maritime and energy industries. He has also served as Senior Principal for Qorval, a nationwide organization focusing on corporate restructuring, renewal, turnaround, crisis and interim management needs and opportunities. During his tenure, Paul led a team that investigated the troubled Kvaerner Philadelphia shipyard and produced a report for Governor Edward G. Rendell.

In addition, Paul was Chairman and CEO of First International Shipping Corporation, which focused on international project finance and investment for shipping and ocean transportation, including asset finance and leasing of ships and other transportation assets. In this capacity, Paul raised more than $3 billion in equity and debt for international shipping projects, including 12 new container ships for the former East German government, eight general cargo ships for a Chinese state shipping company, four multi-purpose cargo ships for a U.S. public company, six iron ore carriers for a German steel mill, six tankers for a Spanish oil company and six new products tankers for a European oil major. He also arranged for a $350 million acquisition finance for a large shipping subsidiary of the major German industrial group Thyssen Krupp and completed the first U.S. public bond issue ($250 million) for a private shipping company.

Early in his career, Paul formed the first Maritime Merchant Bank, Oceanic Finance Corporation based in Bermuda. The equity came from four major Canadian corporations, including Power Corp and Great West Life, and debt from the leading Canadian Banks.

Paul received his education from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, where he is an Associate and a Fellow. He is a member of numerous maritime associations and serves as Chairman of The Maritime Industry Foundation.
